Delivering Through Chaos

"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." - Mike Tyson

Chaos happens. Last-minute scope changes. Unexpected resignations. Critical bugs in production. Vendors that drop the ball. The question isn't whether chaos will strike, it is when. And what separates amateur teams from professional ones is the ability to keep delivering anyway.

Principles for delivering in chaos

1. Protect what is essential

When everything is on fire, you cannot put out every flame at once. Choose what cannot be allowed to burn. Prioritize ruthlessly. Leave the rest for later.

2. Communicate more, not less

In the middle of chaos, the temptation is to go dark. "I'll update everyone once it's fixed." That is a mistake. During a crisis, overcommunication is the rule. Stakeholders would much rather know things are tough than be blindsided later.

3. Break work into smaller pieces

Is a large project stalled? Break it down. Ship in smaller increments. Visible progress sustains morale and builds trust.

4. Accept "good enough"

In chaos, perfection is a luxury. Solve the immediate problem. Document the technical debt. Refine it later.

How to prepare for chaos

  • Up-to-date runbooks: When an incident hits at 3 a.m., nobody wants to figure things out from scratch.
  • Clear communication channels: Who contacts whom? How?
  • Safety margins: Overly tight schedules cannot absorb the unexpected.
  • Simulations: Run incident drills. Practice navigating chaos before it arrives for real.

The stability paradox

Teams that look "lucky" and seem to avoid major crises rarely have fewer problems. They just have better preparation. Stability is not the absence of chaos: it is the ability to navigate through it without sinking.

Prepare when waters are calm. Execute when things get chaotic. That is the formula.
