"A beautiful slide deck will not save a broken strategy."
There is a dangerous craft in corporate life: the art of packaging. Taking a mediocre result and dressing it up as a win. Sleek slides, cherry-picked metrics, and a polished narrative. On the surface, it looks like victory. Underneath, the core problem remains untouched.
Warning signs of over-packaging
1. Cherry-picked metrics
The chart that went up gets a full-screen slide. The metric that tanked stays buried in a spreadsheet tab.
2. Language that softens reality
"Opportunities for improvement" instead of "failures." "Partially achieved" instead of "we missed the target."
3. Focusing on effort rather than outcome
"The team worked around the clock" is not the same as "we delivered real business value."
Why organizations fall into this trap
- Fear of executive retaliation
- A culture that punishes bad news
- Incentives that reward looking successful over being effective
- Lack of leadership maturity to face uncomfortable truths
The antidote
1. Reward candor early
Teams that surface misses early have time to course-correct. Penalize hiding problems, not surfacing them.
2. Define success metrics upfront
Agree on how success will be measured before the project starts, not after the results come in.
3. Ask "so what?"
At the end of every review, ask a simple question: "What does this actually change for the customer or the business?" If the answer is vague, you are looking at internal marketing.
The substance test
Strip away the slide design, the vanity charts, and the buzzwords. What is left? If the core result is hollow, the delivery was pretty, not good.
Substance beats form. Every single time.
