"The wrong question leads to the wrong answer."
"Will AI Agents replace developers?"
This is the question I get asked the most. And the short answer is: no. But the long answer is more interesting — and more useful.
What AI Agents do well
- Generating boilerplate code quickly
- Suggesting implementations for well-defined problems
- Automating repetitive tasks
- Analyzing logs and identifying patterns
- Writing tests for existing code
- Documenting systems
This is impressive. And it will only get better.
What AI Agents do NOT do well (yet)
- Understanding ambiguous business context
- Making trade-off decisions with incomplete information
- Negotiating requirements with stakeholders
- Identifying that the real problem is not the described problem
- Building trust relationships with the client
- Taking responsibility when something goes wrong
This won't change anytime soon.
The right question
The right question isn't "will I be replaced?" — it's "how will I adapt?"
Developers who treat AI as a threat will lose to developers who treat AI as a tool. It's like the calculator: it didn't replace mathematicians, it replaced those who did manual calculations.
The Developer of 2030
Will write less code from scratch. Will review more generated code. Will orchestrate more agents. Will focus more on architecture, quality, security.
Will need:
- Ability to critically evaluate AI outputs
- Efficient prompting skills
- Deep understanding of systems (to know when the AI is wrong)
- Soft skills to deal with humans (which AI doesn't replace)
My position
I am investing heavily in mastering AI Agents. Not out of fear — out of opportunity. Those who know how to use these tools will multiply their capacity. Those who ignore it will be left behind.
The wave is coming. The only choice is to surf or sink.
